You will take back a lot more when you give
My friend and I were at the National Volunteer Philanthropy Centre (NVPC) attending a volunteers' briefing last evening. I volunteer at the "Meet the people" session in Cashew constituency every Monday evening, but I continue to feel that I have the capacity to give a bit more.
The briefing provided a general presentation on volunteerism, and also specific presentations on non-profit organizations like "Methodist Youth Centre" and "Singapore -After care Association". You realize that volunteerism can touch a whole spectrum of activities and people, but you must believe that your efforts no matter how small will make a difference.
It is heartening to see the briefing well-attended. I estimated a crowd of at least 50 people, and these were people with willing faces to give. At the end of the briefing however, there was a short announcement for SMU students to get their CCA card signed. I found that rather amusing.
Nevertheless, I think knowing what volunteerism is and what you can do as a volunteer is the first big step for anyone to make. Personally, volunteerism has taught me to see life in different perspectives. It has taught me to appreciate how lucky I am, and to be happy with what you have. Perhaps I do not own much materially, but you question how far material wealth can take you in life.
I will encourage you to take the 1st step if you have not done so, and use the process to learn more about the person you really are. It is also very true that you will take back a lot more when you give. :)
