Case competitions - contd

From: Reginald Lee, BBA3

Hi everyone! It's too bad that case competitions is not as well-known here in BIZAD as it is in other schools. I'm so lucky to have been selected by the school to go to Hong Kong last October and Copenhagen just three weeks ago. The experience is really something! For me, it was my first time in Europe and my first time to see snow! It was fun at first then it got really cold and wet :P I've also met brilliant people in Hong Kong who can work really hard and play/party just as hard. Certainly we at biz can do the same?

Most of you probably don't know how I got started into the whole thing. It happened quite by chance actually. I was on my way to class in my second year when I happened to meet a very sleepy but very well-dressed Brian. Turns out that he and three others spent the last 24 hours in school preparing a case on Dell to present to Prof. Delios. I got invited into their practice and I was totally amazed. I'm sure those who will watch a case presentation for the very first time will remember the feeling of being blown away by the slides (extremely cool but still professional techniques), the analysis (they thought of everything!), and the delivery. Ever since then, I wanted to take part in such competitions. What attracted me the most was its interdisciplinary nature--that we get to apply all that we learned in BSP, DSC, FNA, MKT and MNO. So when a mail was sent out asking students to sign up for case competitions, I immediately grabbed the chance. The rest, as they say, was history.

If I had to name the most enduring thing I got out of case competitions, I would think of friends. You and your team will just spend so much time together that you either end up hating one another or becoming friends for life. I still remember my very first case group for practice, and it was a showdog dogfood case study: Jeremy, Celestine, Irza.

And here, presenting the unforgettable HKUST Citigroup International case comp team: Wenzhan, Kok Siong, Limin. We nearly pulled each others' hair out!

(Here's the 4 of them together at HKUST)

My Copenhagen Business School case comp team: Xing, Jolene, Doreen, and my internal case competition team: Stephanie, Jeremy, Kok Siong. I also met many of the graduating seniors through case: Leonard, Celeste, Aana, Kimberly, and Navin. I can't imagine staying in case competitions as long as I have without their guidance and support. Let's face it, friends make case a lot more fun! :)
